Influences of Gothic Clothing on Clothing In Medieval Times

Looking through the history, we can draw a conclusion that clothing in medieval times are greatly influenced by gothic clothing, especially the clothing of France, ranging from the view of beauty to the creation of clothing. Generally, you can find affluent gothic elements in their clothing, such as hats, blouses, pants and shoes.

Today I will introduce you its influences in women’s clothing in early times. First is the cotte, which is a skinny coat in ancient Mediterranean area. Women’s cotte are loose on bodice and the upper half of the sleeves, the left part are tighten and adorned with buttons.

Chemise is a kind of underwear which is made of white linen. The cuffs are tightened with delicate embroideries and ribbons.

Next is surcot. It is said the coat was worn on the cotte in war times. The materials mainly are silk or cotton. The bust and skirt are loose, which is quite charming. Sleeves are in various length, such as long and short. In addition, surcots with no sleeves were most popular in that time. Delicate embroideries can be found on collars, sleeves and busts.
